One of my daughters turned 21 this last week and the other is about to graduate from college....my sons are grown too! It has been a while since I birthed a baby or had to wake up to feed or cuddle one in the middle of the night but being part of the birthing community affords me the opportunity to work with families that are just beginning.... it is the best of both worlds...at least to me. Between that age of being a young mom and being a grandma I get to be a voice of knowledge, an ear to listen, a hand to hold, a shoulder to lean on and so much more. It is so amazing to be allowed to be a part of that sacred space in someone's life. Their moment of greatest vulnerability and greatest strength as they embark on the most rewarding and challenging journey of their own lives. It reminds me that it is okay to need and be needed in a world where we are told that we must do all and be all, at all times. When in reality that just isn't possible and we would be worse off if it were. Our sense of family and community is what binds us all and without that we really would have nothing. So to the students I teach and the parents I have assisted in bringing their babies into the world I give you my THANKS for many lessons learned and many yet to come.
